Welcome to CU Biodiesel!
We are a non-profit student organization dedicated to advancing the use and knowledge of biodiesel, a vegetable based and clean-burning alternative to petroleum diesel. Our efforts are focused on the University of Colorado at Boulder and the surrounding community. We address the commonly held concern that the use of petroleum diesel is done at the detriment of our health and environment and necessitates a dependence on foreign oil. CU Biodiesel strives to educate the private and public sectors about the production and implementation of biodiesel and simultaneously promote it as a renewable and valuable resource.

Current Happenings and Upcoming Events

  • CU Carbon Neutral Forum!

Monday, April 14th multiple environmentally friendly organizations are collaborating to hold a Q&A forum about what CU students can do to make our campus carbon neutral. The more people signed on to this goal, the stronger the message to the administration. Please come to the Leeds (Koelbel) building from 5-8PM. We will show Leonardo DiCaprio's newest film, "11th Hour," and follow it by the student forum. FREE pizza and soda for the event. If you can't make it, but wish to support the cause (sign a petition), email info@cubiodiesel.org

  • Biodiesel 101 Workshop

Saturday, April 26th we will be hosting our monthly Biodiesel 101 Workshop from 10-1PM. If you would like to learn about our program, how to make biodiesel, or want to learn about alternative fuels please come. It is free to students, and $5 suggested donations for the public to cover costs. Please RSVP by emailing info@cubiodiesel.org

  • ESTER

ESTER is our mobile Biodiesel research and education lab. It is our largest project, investigating ways to increase efficacy in the refinement of biofuels. learn more about ESTER

  • Volunteer with CU Biodiesel

There are many ways to get involved with CU Biodiesel and gain some real world experience right here on campus. See what positions are available

  • Biodiesel in Thailand

This is a new page detailing the work of CU Biodiesel members over the summer and into the fall of 2006. This site is still under construction so check back soon for updates. click here to find out more

  • Energy is the vein that pumps life into modern society. For decades, the energy market has been dominated by the use of fossil fuels; where petroleum has been the milestone. Although the glorious age of crude has skyrocketed new industries, it has brought devastating consequences to the environment, as well as social, political and economic tribulations.   As a student organization, we are committed to reducing the use of petroleum diesel fuel, a major contributor to global climate change. A higher necessity, equally valuable as political and economical will, is awareness.

  • Check out the Common Good video on Boulder Biodiesel!! Better have a fast connection as this is 80 some megs. It discusses last years conference. video

  • The biodiesel tax incentive was signed by the President . To read about the incentive click here: incentive.

  • In partnership with Boulder Biodiesel, members of both groups recently help build a processor in Bogota, Columbia, for las Gaviotas. One year ago at the Sustainable Resources Conference, Paulo Lugari, the founder of Las Gaviotas, met with members of both groups and invited them down to assist in the construction of a biodiesel processor. Thanks to Evan Belser, a draft research paper outlining the trip and the knowledge gained is now available

Biodiesel on CU Campus

  • In our first year, the University of Colorado used of over 10,000 gallons of biodiesel (over 50,000 gallons of B20) annually.

  • Each of the 13 diesel passenger buses is now using 20% biodiesel (B20). When spring comes, three buses will use B100 Plus we have ten trucks and two recycling vehicles operating on biodiesel blends.

-Average Annual B100 Use 9315 gallons
-Average Semester B100 use 3548 gallons

For a full excel spreadsheet of statistics: vehicles.xls

  • One of CU's trash trucks and a pickup truck that gathers recycling has switched to B20.

  • We are currently in the design phase of a new education and production facility. This mobile processor will be a research and education tool that we will take to workshops, events, and schools a around Colorado. Construction is already underway, look for ESTER coming to a place near you soon.

  • We are offering biodiesel and sustainability lectures/workshops to all CU classes. This is open to all courses and departments and can be tailored to fit individual needs. If you would like CU biodiesel members to come to your class then send an e-mail to info@cubiodiesel.org to schedule a time.
